XENYX- How Do I Set Up The MIDI Transport Controls On My UFX1204 Or UFX1604?

Where is MIDI on the UFX? I cannot see any MIDI sockets!

The 5 buttons of the transport section of your UFX mixer can send and receive MIDI data. Receive? Yes,
they can! In fact this means that you can switch on/off the light of each button individually by MIDI
commands from your DAW/MIDI software. But mostly you will need these buttons to send commands to
your DAW/MIDI software, for transport control of your recording engine.

How to prepare MIDI operation?


o Set your UFX into USB- or FireWire-operation with the rear MODE switch.

o Connect with the corresponding cable (USB or FW) to your computer.

o Windows users > install the USB- or FireWire driver.

o OS X users > select UFX as your MIDI I/O device at the Audio-MIDI-Setup utility.

o Open your DAW or MIDI program (Win/OSX) and select UFX as your MIDI I/O interface.

o Now you can assign the buttons via learn command in your DAW, or use the Mackie Control mode.


Which MIDI modes are available?

There are 2 MIDI modes:

o Standard mode (“Std” in the display while booting/powering on): The UFX sends note commands
and receives CC commands (for the button LEDs). Normally you will use this mode if you want to
assign individual functions to the buttons or if your DAW does not support the Mackie Control
protocol.

o Mackie Control mode (“MAC” in the display while booting/powering on): This is the easiest way to
remote control the transport section of your DAW. Just select Mackie Control mode in your DAW
and on your UFX, and here we go! In this mode the button LEDs correspond to the Mackie Control
protocol, and it doesn’t matter if you press a transport button in your software or on your mixer
hardware, both will work and update the button light of each other.


How can I change the MIDI mode for the transport section?

This can only be done while booting phase of the UFX. This happens after powering on the mixer or if
you change the rear MODE switch position:

o Press and hold down the “>>” button (Fast Forward)

o Power on the mixer (or change the rear MODE to USB or FW)

o Wait until “Std” (Standard mode) or “MAC” (Mackie Control mode) gets indicated at the display

o Now release the “>>” button

NOTE: If you want to change from “Std” to “MAC” or vice versa, repeat the above steps.
NOTE: The MIDI mode change works only in USB- or FireWire-mode, but not in STAND ALONE mode.

Why doesn’t the display indicate anything?

In USB- or FW-mode the transport section is a MIDI controller and the display has no function (apart
from indicating the selected MIDI mode while boot phase).

Why are the button LEDs of the transport section off if I press any button in USB or FW mode?

That’s normal by default in Standard MIDI mode (“Std”). If you want to get the LEDs triggered, you have
to assign them in your DAW. In Mackie Control mode (“MAC”) you don’t need to assign, you will see that
the LEDs get triggered automatically if you select the appropriate protocol in your DAW.

How can I assign the transport buttons in Standard MIDI mode (“Std”) for USB- or FW-operation?

Here an overview (TX = transmit, RX = receive):

o Rewind button (<<): TX = note 1 (C#-1) / RX = CC1

o Fast Fwd button (>>): TX = note 2 (D-1) / RX = CC2

o Rec button (o): TX = note 3 (D#-1) / RX = CC3

o Stop button ([]): TX = note 4 (E-1) / RX = CC4

o Play button (>): TX = note 5 (F-1) / RX = CC5

NOTE: All MIDI data have to be transmitted on MIDI Channel 1.
NOTE: TX (sent notes): Button down = Note On = value 127 / Button release = Note Off = value 0
NOTE: RX (received CCs): CC with value 0 = button LED off / CC with value 1-127 = button LED on

Why does the MIDI communication for the transport section not work in STAND ALONE mode?

In STAND ALONE mode the transport section operates as a “stand alone USB recorder” with external
connected USB hard-disk drive, but not as an (audio or MIDI) interface for the computer.
