X32 : 32 i/o Using a S16 and ADAT Connection
As can be seen in this screen shot from the Behringer X32 Wiki
(available at the following link), It is possible to connect 2 S16 and then 2 additional ADAT compatible devices to achieve the fully 32 in, 32 out channel configuration for your X32.
Here is how to achieve this setup. You will need the following –
2 x S16
ADAT Capable device (for this setup we are using 2 ADA8000)
First, connect your X32 to the first S16 using a Cat 5 ethernet cable to the AES50 ports. It does not matter which port you connect to, in this example I have used A to A. Next connect the AES50 B port on your first S16 to the AES50 ports on your second S16. You will then need to connect the 2 ADAT outputs on the second S16 to the ADA8000 inputs. On the rear of the ADA8000 you will see a switch to set the audio source. Ensure that this is set to ‘ADAT IN, SLAVE’ to draw its signal from the ADAT inputs. No further configuration is needed for the ADA’s.
For this setup, I have also connected a wireless adapter to the X32 to allow me to use the X32 Edit Application wirelessly.
Once everything is connected power on your whole system, then press the Setup button on your X32 and in the Global menu set your desired sample rate, then set the Synchronization setting to internal to make your X32 the master of this system. This can also be performed from the X32 edit application in the Setup, Mixer window.
Next, on your first S16, push and hold the ‘Config’ button then rotate the HA Control Button all the way to the left. This will then sync your first S16 to be channel outputs 1-8 in your system (once we have completed the routing). On the second S16, perform the same action but set this so that the ‘OUT +8’ LED on the display is illuminated. This will then set the second S16 to be channel outputs 9-16. This will also route the ADAT outputs to the correct channels. Please refer to the following video for further information on syncing your X32 with your S16;
Open the Routing tab of your X32 and select your channel inputs, (for this example I am using the XUSB Card as an input) then scroll to the Output 1-16 tab. Set the output source to Direct channel out 1-16 (This will bypass the main LR output so ensure that your faders are down when routing this). For the following 16 channels you will need to use the Ultranet output, so scroll to the Ultranet tab, and configure these to Direct Channel out 17-32, (again this will bypass the Main LR outputs so ensure the faders are down). Next go to the AES50 A/B output tab and set the output source to Out 1-8/9-16 then Ultranet 1-8/9-16.
Connect your outputs on the device to the relevant speakers/output source that you require and raise the independent channel faders. You should now be able to mix each channel to its own individual output.
