Logic and setting up the Virus for multiple outputs / multiple parts

Question

How do I set up Logic so I can use the 4 part multi-timbrality and the 4 outputs of the Virus|PowerCore?

Answer

  1. Please get this file for Logic 9, as there were some minor changes.

Create a new audio instrument channel in your Arrange window:

  2. Set the MIDI channel for your audio instrument channel to 'All':

  3. Open the multi channel version of the Virus, as this gives you some extra flexibility in terms of signal routing:

  4. Open the environment, create 4 MIDI instrument objects (new > instrument). Give them unique names, like Virus 1, 2, 3 and 4, assign them to MIDI channels 1 through 4, and cable them to the audio instrument channel, on which the Virus is instantiated:

  5. Create 3 Aux channels for Virus parts 2, 3 and 4:

  6. Route the audio from Virus parts 2, 3 and 4 to Aux channels 1, 2 and 3, by selecting the respective Virus Output as input for the 3 Aux channels:

  7. Go back to the Arrange window and create new MIDI tracks for each of the 4 MIDI instruments:

  8. These are the tasks for each component in the setup:

    • Audio instrument channel 1, will output Virus part 1 + the return signal from the FX processors.
    • Aux channels 2, 3 and 4 will output the dry signal of the Virus parts 2, 3 and 4. The FX return signal for these parts is output on Audio instrument channel 1.
    • MIDI track 1-4 control the MIDI on the 4 Virus parts. Record your MIDI data onto these tracks.

  9. Use the pop-up menu in the Virus|PowerCore, to switch between the different parts in order to assign/edit the sounds:

  10. Please note, that the outputs of all 4 parts are routed to 'Out 1' by default when you instantiate the Virus, so be sure to set each part to their corresponding output (part 1 = Out 1, part 2 = Out 2 etc) on the 'FX-1' page:

    Enjoy !
