Recommended software for MIDI dumps / back-ups / software updates

Question

Which software can I use to make a MIDI bulk dump, for the purpose of backing up settings / presets / update the software in my unit?

Answer

Windows.

We can recommend the free program MIDI-OX for Windows, which is available for download from this page.

How to receive the MIDI dump in MIDIOX:

First, install MIDI-OX and make sure that you have the appropriate MIDI connection between the unit and your PC. To save the SysEx dump on your PC, please do the following:

  1. Launch MIDI-OX
  2. Choose View / Sysex
  3. In the Sysex window, choose Sysex > Receive manual dump
  4. When the dump is completed, choose Display Window > Save as...

How to send the data back to your unit:

  1. Launch MIDI-OX
  2. In the Sysex window, choose Command > Window > Load File and navigate the location where you stored the file.
  3. Choose Command Window > Send Sysex

Mac OS X:

We can recommend the free program Snoize SysEx Librarian for the Mac, which is available for download from this page.

How to receive the MIDI dump in SysEx Librarian:

First, install SysEx Librarian and make sure that you have the appropriate MIDI connection between the unit and the Mac. To save the SysEx dump on the Mac, please do the following:

  1. Launch SysEx Librarian.
  2. Select your MIDI interface in the dropdown menu at the top (if it's not already selected)
  3. Click the 'Record Many'
  4. When the dump is completed doubleclick the newly created file in the window and.name it. It has automatically been saved to your home directory ( under /Users/<your name>/Documents/SysEx Librarian/ ).

How to send the data back to your unit:

  1. Launch SysEx Librarian.
  2. Select your MIDI interface in the dropdown menu at the top (if it's not already selected)
  3. Drag the MIDI SysEx file from the Finder into the frame of SysEx Librarian (if it's not already in there).
  4. Select it with the mouse.
  5. Click Play.

Please note: with some TC hardware products, several users have reported issues when trying to update the software using a Mac. The only workaround would be to either use Virtual PC with a USB MIDI interface, or use a 'real' Windows PC.
