VoiceOne: How to control with the Oxygen-8

Question

How can I control the Voiceone with the MIDIMAN / M-Audio Oxygen 8?

Answer

Instructions for controlling the VoiceOne with the Oxygen-8.

Setup.

The Midiman Oxygen 8 comes with a 'Wall-Wart' Power supply, and you can also run the unit on batteries. If you use a computer and have a free USB port, you can set the unit up with the driver disc, and the unit is powered by the supply through the USB cable. This setup will be as a stand-alone controller.

  1. Connect the Power Supply to the Oxygen 8, or install 6 AA 1.5 v batteries in the bottom compartment.
  2. Set the Power switch on the rear panel of the unit to 'DC in 9v.'
  3. The unit will take a couple of seconds to initialize.
  4. The piano keys have functions attached them that are available when you press the MIDI Select button.
  5. The default MIDI channel for the Oxygen 8 is channel1. When you play MIDI notes and Use the Bend and Mod wheels, they send out on this channel.
  6. To change the MIDI Channel: Press MIDI Select, press the white key labeled MIDI Channel, press the channel number using the piano keys, press the Enter piano key, press MIDI Select.
  7. To assign MIDI CCs to the slider: The slider can be configured to send a CC control on the channel as selected in #6.

    · Press MIDI Select, press CC No.
    · The display will read - - - . Using the number keys, choose the number of the knob you want to assign. Press Enter.
    · Choose the parameter (CC) number you want to assign to the slider, using the number keys. Press Enter.
    · When finished, press MIDI/Select.
    · You should now be able to send the CC number you've chosen, values 0-127 over the slider you have set up, on the MIDI channel you have chosen under step 6.

  8. To assign MIDI CCs to the knobs: Each of these 8 knobs can send a separate CC on a separate channel.

    · Press MIDI Select, press SetCTRL.
    · The display will read n - - . Using the number keys, choose the number of the knob you want to assign. Press Enter.
    · The display will read P - - . Choose the parameter (CC) number you want to assign to the knob, using the number keys. Press Enter.
    · The display will read C - -. Choose the MIDI Channel you want the knob to transmit on, using the number keys. This is a channel independent of the other controls. Press Enter.
    · The display will read: - - - . At this point, you can continue this process for other controllers. (Repeat steps a-d for the other knobs).
    · When finished, press MIDI/Select.
    · You should now be able to send CC values 0-127 over the knobs you have set up, on the CC controllers and MIDI channels you have chosen.

VoiceOne Setup Notes.

  1. Refer to the VoiceOne User Manual for Audio setup instructions.
  2. See that the MIDI Out of the Oxygen 8 is connected to the MIDI In of the VoiceOne.
  3. In the MIDI/Utility section, set different MIDI Channels for each choice for best results:

    · MIDI Chan - Overall MIDI channel of the unit. Be sure this set to the same channel as the Channel you selected in the Oxygen 8 setup notes above in #5
    · MIDI PchShf- Set the MIDI Channel to receive pitch shift information on.
    · MIDI PchCor - Set the MIDI Channel to receive Pitch correction information on.
    · MIDI PchOut - Set the MIDI channel that VoiceOne will send out Pitch information on.

I would make all of the above MIDI channels separate, to avoid any MIDI loops or glitching. Refer to the VoiceOne user manual for CC information.

Enjoy controlling VoiceOne from the Midiman Oxygen 8 !
